    Dear Guest,

Under the new UPSC guidelines since 2011, Civil Services Exam conducted by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) is called the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT).

The Preliminary Examination consists of two papers, both Objective type carrying 400 marks (200 marks each). Those who clear the preliminary exams are eligible to take the Mains exam.

The Mains Examination consists of nine papers. There are 2 papers of non-ranking type and are only qualifying in nature. The first paper is of any one Indian language, to be selected by the candidate out of languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution, and the second paper is of English, which is a compulsory paper. The other 7 papers are of ranking type. These are as follows :

Paper 3 Essay. Total Marks 200
Paper 4 & 5 General Studies (300 Marks for each paper). Total Marks 600
Paper 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th Two subjects from the optional subjects each contains 2 papers, total 4 papers (300 marks for each paper). Total Marks

Plus there are 300 marks for the interview, making a total of 2300 marks.

As for your question regarding preparation, I suggest that you enroll with a good IAS coaching institute, remember, you shall have to put in around 14 hours of study time everyday to be really prepared for the Mains. It is no doubt, one of the toughest exam in the world. I wish you all the best.
