For both Probationary Officer and Clerical post the candidates are taken in and are offered training for a fixed period of time. The main difference between the two posts is the type of work involved in each position. A person joining as a clerk will have to do most of the clerical related jobs in a bank. The Probationary Officer’s job is similar to a Manager Trainee position. For a Probationary Officer the main qualities requirement are decision-making skills, leadership qualities and intelligence to tackle different situations.
Probationary officers can be absorbed for different roles in banks like in operations, credit group, treasury, back office etc and it depends upon the performance of the candidate as well as mgmt decision/perception about the candidate ability.
It is worth noting that all POs get a training of almost 1 year and they are under probation period, that's why called PO. In this 1 year training they are supposed to do all kind of banking works including cash, clerical stuff, data entry, draft and other operations.

PO are given training after selection in the exams.They are posted in managerial posts such as customer service manager or branch operation manager or branch sales manager or corporate group manager or business analyst as well..The pay package is also very hefty these days for Probationary Officers and there is good chance to get promoted to branch manager post.
