Indian railway is separated into different zone which is further divied into few divisions and department like technical and non- technical department.

TECHNICAL DEPARTMENT-professionals in civil, mechanical, telecommunication and electrical engineering.
NON-TECHNICAL DEPARTMENT- general services like personal management, accounts, defense and RPF (RAILWAY PROTECTION FORCE)

In both department(technical and non-technical) employees are categorized into 4 groups ie. group A,B,C,D.

GROUP A- Officers in this group are recruited through exams like UPSC,SCRA,IRAS,IRTS etc..
GROUP B-no specific exam rather they are promoted from GROUP C.
GROUP C and GROUP D-recruited through RRBs(RAILWAY RECRUITMENT BOARDS)
