PSUs recruit usually through their own exams. From this year many PSUs have made GATE score as mandatory for caal in the interview or group discussion. You should complete your basic core papers and keep solving reasoning as well as verbal papers of RS Aggarwal. You can also consult GATE sample papers for GATE and can go through previous year papers of GATE as it is quite similar. If you qualify in GATE with high score you will be called for Interview. And if your preparation of GATE is sound, you can qualify for other exams taken by some PSUs as well.

    Dear friend,
By PSU exam you get the job in public sector union companys like BHEL,HAL,NTPC and many more.Their syllabus are totally different they check from your technical knowledge,General awareness question,Aptitude problems.
Whereas in Gate exam they ask objective type problem regarding the syllabus of engineering(Trade which you are choosen),it's totally depend on your techanical knowledge whatever you learn in you engineering life from 1st year to final year.so in order to crack PSU exams apart from GATE preparation from G.K publications or Made easy Publications you need to have command on Aptitude skills for that R.S Agarval is better and have some general awareness.
    all the best.

Friend, In PSU exam they ask GATE level questions from your specialisation along with aptitude questions. You need to have thorough knowledge of your domain to crack the exam. Since cut-off goes high even more than 60% for general, so you need to require good knowledge with good practice to crack the PSU.
    All the best.

Re: How to prepare for the PSU exams while doing B.Tech? What should I study?

    for the gate exam,
you can prepare from arihant publications book or g.k.publications book.
if you get a good score card,
you can get placed in one of the psu's like:-
    sail
    gail
    bhel
    bel
    oil
    ongc
    ntpc
    isro
    drdo etc

you can appear for gate exam,
in the pre-final year and final year of engg.

one thing to note is that if you get below 70% in the gate exam, you will not be issued a score card.

yes, seperate exams are also conducted by the psu's.
so you can sit for :-
    sail exam
    gail exam
    ntpc exam
    bhel exam
    bel exam
    ongc exam etc.

you can sit for the gate exam after passing your 3rd year because:-
the syllabus mainly consists of topics till Vth semester,so you can cover most of it.
you can give it a try,if not succeded, you can at least get an experience .
and on getting a better score the next year, the better score will be used to place you in psu's.

    so,all the best..

Re: How to prepare for the PSU exams while doing B.Tech? What should I study?

i forgot to answer the second part...
    for what to study...
the syllabus consists of your branch papers along with english aptitude.
so you can brush up your general english with the help of books specially published for gate exam preparation
or you can just start going through the dictionary.

and for the other subjects of your branch,
    you will get enough theory,
like a summary at the start of each chapter in g.k.publications book
and then after revising your theory part,
you can go for the questions and practice them.

try to solve as many questions as you can for practice.

    all the best
